Breckland Farriers Ltd. are pleased to offer remedial farriery to the Uplands Way Veterinary Group. John Blake, owner of Breckland Farriers, has been a registered farrier for 23 years. During this time the business has grown to cover South Norfolk and the Breckland area. John has been an Approved Training Farrier for 10 years, and is now training his sixth apprentice. As a training farrier, he is obliged to attend professional development training courses. These keep the business up to date with all the modern developments in farriery. At present, two of John’s qualified former apprentices still work for him gaining further experience; he also employs 3 apprentices at various stages of training.

As farrier to the International League for the Protection of Horses, Hall Farm Snetterton, John, along with the vets from Upland Way, is responsible for the farriery care of the 100+ equines. He visit’s the ILPH on Tuesdays to treat a wide range of lameness and locomotion problems. Sometimes this involves close work with the vets deciding on a course of treatment to return the horses to soundness.

One of the common problems he sees is the increasing number of laminitic cases. The one positive side of this is that he has had success in the treatment of laminitis with the use of modern thermo-plastic shoes, the Equine Digit Support System shoes and impression pads. With his experience in using these modern farriery techniques, he is able to assist the vets in their treatment of this complicated disease.

Along with the ILPH horses, he has experience of shoeing a wide range of equines, including stud work, showing horses, show jumpers, eventers and race horses. However, he still shoes many privately owned horses and ponies and is able to give the owners the benefit of an experienced farriery business.
